For the past decade New Zealander guitarist and composer Peter Koopman has called Sydney home. Drawing from a wide range of influences from Oceania and beyond, he has developed a unique voice as a musician and an improviser, characterised by a playful melodic sense, rhythmic interplay, as well as using a variety of textures, sounds and colours.
Winner of the prestigious National Jazz Awards in 2022, the following year he released his debut album as a leader – “Now Where?”, a collection of seven original tunes recorded live at Golden Retriever studios with Tim Firth on drums, Lachlan Hamilton on tenor sax and Jacques Emery on double bass. He can also be heard on multiple albums from Sydney bands Scoredatura & Coast, as well as recordings from Kate Wadey, Aaron Blakey & Daryl Aberhart among others. He has performed with artists such as Will Vinson, Ben Vanderwal, Sean Wayland, Vince Jones, Aloe Blacc, Donny Benét and many others, as well as touring around Europe, the UK, USA, Asia and New Zealand.
