  • Young Women’s Jazz Workshop

Jazz, at its heart, is a radical music, driving and representing social change in every era. As we commit to supporting the next generation of gender diverse artists, SIMA has created a workshop that can change lives.

Designed for young women and gender diverse vocalist and instrumentalists looking to find community and grow their skills, this program works as both an introduction to jazz as a vocation, and improvisation as a path to knowledge.

Winner of the APRA Art Music Award for excellence in education.

The course welcomes musicians of all levels of jazz experience. If you have some prior experience reading music and playing your instrument, we would love to have you join us. Participants are placed into small groups according to their instrumental experience and musical background, ensuring everyone learns at a pace that suits them in a supportive and welcoming environment. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other young musicians who share your interests.

No previous experience with jazz or improvisation is required. Whether you’ve never played a blues scale before or are simply curious about what jazz is all about, this course is designed to help you take those first steps with confidence. It is particularly well suited to students with a music background who would like to explore improvisation, develop new musical skills, and get a taste of jazz in a friendly, encouraging setting.

For students with more experience, the workshops provide an opportunity to build confidence improvising, strengthen ensemble skills, and develop as creative musicians while working with expert teachers from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Jazz department.

Across the two days, participants will learn in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment designed to build confidence, encourage creativity, and foster a love of making music together.
