SUMMARY:Sound The Alarm
DESCRIPTION:A large ensemble instigation for Palestine.   \nFor the last two years\, SOUND THE ALARM has worked to break the silence and censorship of the establishment in regards the genocide in Gaza. In the proud tradition of Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra\, and Alex Schlippenbach’s Globe Unity Orchestra\, SOUND THE ALARM brings together the city’s most expressive and committed improvisers\, composers and jazz musicians in a sonic protest and call for piece.  \ \nAfter the global recognition of their debut self titled album on Relative Pitch records out of New York City\, this 20 piece ensemble returns with a studio album of intimate emotional storytelling to be released on July 3rd\, the 1000th day of the genocide.   \n“Save Me Last” (Alma\, from under the rubble) is a three part tribute to the resilience and spirit of Palestinians\, and those who would stand by their side through the unrelenting horror of our time.

SUMMARY:BELIEVE Nature's God Album Release
DESCRIPTION:Recorded at Golden Retriever in Marrickville\, Nature’s God explores a patient\, evocative and evolving sound world\, where piano meditations and percussion interludes make way for sudden symmetries and swinging off-shoots. \nThis powerhouse band combines four of the most inventive improvisers – and composers – in Sydney’s creative music scene. Drummer and composer Laurence Pike has internationally released five solo albums (as well as two duo albums with Mike Nock); bassist Clayton Thomas spent over a decade based in Berlin\, recording with artists such as Ken Vandemark\, Paul Lovens\, and Alexander von Schlippenbach (as well as founding the Now Now festival of spontaneous music in Sydney); keyboardist Novak Manojlovic was the recipient of the 2019 Freedman Fellowship (Jazz) and is the Artistic Director of S.I.M.A.\, recording with groups such as microfiche\, HEKKA\, and Godtet; alto saxophonist Peter Farrar toured with Wadada Leo Smith and recorded with Mike Nock. \nBELIEVE connects the spectrum of contemporary creative sound making with the fluid\, anything is possible momentum of free jazz. When benchmarks are Albert Ayler and The Necks\, and you intend to play for the universe\, not the algorithm\, the remarkable is possible. For the past three and half years this Sydney-based quartet has committed to a musical process of learning\, exploring\, experimenting and growing in public. No other local group has been so committed to playing live.

SUMMARY:Volant
DESCRIPTION:The band’s debut album (Earshift Music\, 2024) was born out of Ottignon’s extended period of pandemic solitude\, a rare stillness in a career defined by relentless touring and collaboration. Alone with his reeds and recordings\, he jammed to Joe Lovano\, Keith Jarrett\, Ornette Coleman and The Necks\, composing music that became “an echo of all the sounds that had resonated with me over the years.” The result was deeply personal: a modern acoustic jazz language rooted in the spiritual searching of John Coltrane\, Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders\, yet unmistakably original. \nAs the Sydney Morning Herald states\, “the impression of flight is not observed\, but is experienced and exhilarating.” Central to Volant’s identity is the musicians Ottignon has carefully assembled. Tsamouras brings chromatic hues\, sparse but luminous\, her playing lending the music much of its buoyancy. James grounds the ensemble with both her playing and overall confidence\, with her arco work conjuring dark\, textured mystery. And Chan\, whose drumming gives the band a new\, propulsive motion\, keeps the ensemble alert to every shift in the music’s current. \nIn the time since the ensemble’s debut release\, they have continued to evolve as a creative force. Their live performances now incorporate new compositions from all members. The forthcoming second album promises to deepen their collective voice\, from groove-driven guttural intensity to the most delicate and contemplative of moods. \nAs the musicians play\, Volant elevates into something much grander: music that holds joy and melancholy in the same breath\, born of introspection\, and offered outward.

SUMMARY:Jazz:NOW 2026\, Ep. 2 – STANDING ROOM
DESCRIPTION:Birthed at a humble café residency off Oxford St. in 2021\, Manfredo Lament is the improvised music group led by Kurt Lam on synth and keys\, and Gabriel Haslam on drums. Nominated for Best Live Act at the FBi SMAC Awards last year and fresh off a support slot for US phenom MonoNeon\, Manfredo Lament are spearheading the new wave of underground Sydney improvised music. A rotating roster of Sydney’s ‘who’s who’ of improvisers joins Lam and Haslam as they weave their way through an entirely improvised set while the audience is invited along for the ride. \n“This second Jazz:NOW show – a collaboration with CG Discs – is something I’ve been excited about for a long time. CG Discs have been at the forefront of some of Sydney’s most thrilling and best-kept musical secrets. They understand that there is a deep relationship between jazz music and the dancefloor\, and it is a relationship that too often goes unrecognised. At this Jazz:NOW show\, SIMA and CG Discs look to spotlight that connection. Here\, we embrace the new wave of improvisors – including Manfredo Lament and Cracked Suzies – who have been making all the right noises in Sydney’s underground warehouse scene and building a community that is helping to define our new cultural voice. It’s standing room only – see you in the inimitable NOW!” – Novak Manojlovic

SUMMARY:Jason Bruer & Hammerhead
DESCRIPTION:Powerhouse sextet known as Hammerhead emerged onto the Sydney music scene in 2011\, drawing from a rich array of influences harking back to the late 1950s and early 1960s ‘Hard Bop’ movement. Formed under the leadership of internationally acclaimed tenor saxophonist Jason Bruer\, the ensemble consists of Andrew Robertson on alto saxophone and flute\, Simon Ferenci on trumpet\, Greg Coffin on piano\, Alex Hirlian on drums\, and David Quinn on bass.  \nTheir debut album\, ‘Mozaic’ (2014)\, paid homage to the pioneers of the hard bop genre and garnered widespread acclaim both in Australia and Japan. Since then\, Hammerhead’s musical trajectory has evolved into a collection of original compositions penned by band leader Bruer\, reflecting an eclectic blend of influences encompassing urban jazz\, hard bop\, funk\, and chamber jazz. This shift underscores a significant contemporary evolution in their artistic approach and style.  \nIn 2019\, the ensemble released their 2nd album\, ‘Turning Point’ to\, featuring ten original compositions by Bruer. This release showcased a broader spectrum of compositional diversity\, aligning with Bruer’s vision to diversify the band’s repertoire drawing from his disparate influences. The album received widespread acclaim both here in Australia and also the UK and ABC jazz still plays it.  \nThis shift in style and focus on an all original repertoire has earned Hammerhead national recognition and acclaim captured by their dynamic live performances. Their ascendance has seen them grace the stages of prestigious jazz festivals across the country\, including The Wangaratta Jazz & Blues Festival\, Sydney Conservatorium International Jazz Festival\,  Manly Jazz Festival\, Thredbo Jazz Festival\, Capital Jazz Festival (Canberra) & The Inner West Marrickville Festival. Additionally\, they have delivered sold-out performances at esteemed venues such as Gods Cafe\, Smiths Alternative & The ANU in Canberra\, the Wollongong Conservatoire of Music\, Finding Filmores in Kiama & The Jazz Basement in Wodonga..In 2019\, they headlined the ‘Jazz Up North’ concert series at the Tanks Art Centre in Cairns and performed in Brisbane\, Queensland. They have maintained a monthly residency at Lazybones Lounge in Sydney for close to ten years as well as regularly performing at Foundry616 & Venue505  \n2023 saw the release of their 3rd studio album ‘I Didn’t Get To Where I Am Today’. It garnered many reviews including a 4.5* review in ‘The Australian’ and legendary jazz pianist Mike Nock hailed it as their best album to date. It contains 10 new original compositions from bandleader Jason Bruer. The music was written during the pandemic and resultant lockdowns and is Bruer’s artistic response to his first-hand experiences as a sufferer of long Covid. Bruer is currently writing new material for another album which they hope to record next year.

SUMMARY:Jazz:NOW 2026\, Ep. 4 – GHOSTS BETWEEN STREAMS II
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of Ghosts Between Streams\, the virtuosic genre-bending ensemble Delay 45 led by award-winning trumpet player and composer Tom Avgenicos (Freedman Fellow ’22) returns with its second iteration: a dynamic fusion of contemporary jazz\, strings\, and a powerful visual counterpoint which explores the environmental history of the ancient Coquun (Hunter River). With Ghost Between Streams winning Best in Music and Best in Dance at the 2024 Sydney Fringe Festival\, this show is the Sydney debut of Avgenicos’ lauded new work which at its heart\, this is a conversation between past and present. \nTom Avgenicos is a trumpeter\, composer\, and producer living and working between Muloobinba (Newcastle) and Gadigal (Sydney) across a diverse range of creative contexts\, from contemporary classical and improvised music to collaborations with breakdancers and multimedia artists. Driven by environmental sustainability and a deep connection to place\, Avgenicos seeks to create works that fosters meaningful dialogue between artists\, performers and audiences. \nHis work has been performed at the Sydney Opera House\, Melbourne Recital Centre and MONA and internationally across Europe.  Recent awards and recognitions include the Freedman Jazz Fellowship\, Best in Music and Best in Dance at the 2024 Sydney Fringe Festival\, a 2025 APRA Art Music Award nomination\, and the 2025 Made New Commission. He leads the ensemble Delay 45 – a renowned cross-genre group who have developed  a dynamic performance style that flows seamlessly between structure and spontaneity. Drawing from hip-hop\, minimalism\, modern jazz and contemporary classical music\, simple and recurring motifs interspersed with tight-knit interplay and textural dynamism characterise their performance style. \n“Like many fans of improvised music in Australia\, I have keenly followed Tom Avgenicos’ career as he continues to grow into one of the country’s most restless and pre-eminent creative voices. Programming the Sydney debut of his new large ensemble work Ghosts Between Streams II\, which premiered to acclaim at Newcastle’s New Annual Festival\, was a no brainer for me. Expect to be blown away by not only his technical virtuosity\, but also his mature sense of subtlety and the scope of his artistic vision. I can’t wait to see this multimedia show come together\, and the walls of the Oxford Art Factory painted with this story\, through both music and image. This night will also feature the presentation of new commissioned works by this year’s recipient of the Judy Bailey Emerging Composers Award in Sabine Tapia\, celebrating the legacy of the great composer\, improviser and teacher Judy Bailey as well as Sabine’s  significant contributions to the rich creative landscape of Sydney. We are ecstatic to be able to afford this opportunity to Sabine and to play some small part in preserving Judy Bailey’s profound artistic legacy.” – Novak Manojlovic
