Origami: Wu-Xing

Nominated for The Age Music Victoria Awards for Best Jazz Album 2018, “Wu Xing” translates in Chinese as “five elements”: Wood ( - mù), Fire ( - huh), Earth ( - tu), Metal ( - jin), and Water ( - shui). Taking listeners on a journey through the transformative states of each element, Wu Xing features Wang Zheng-Ting, a master sheng player (Chinese mouth organ) and demonstrates the virtuosity, spirit and imagination that Adam Simmons has become synonymous with over they years leading projects such as the Adam Simmons Toy Band, New Blood, Collider or as a contributor in ensembles such as Gotye and Pugsley Buzzard. Oragami also features the pivotal talents of Howard Cairnes (Way Out West) and Hugh Harvey (The Meltdown, Cat Empire, Julien Wilson’s “B for Chicken” and Paper Planes)

This promises to be a masterful and immersive closing Jazz Now performance.

Adam Simmons (alto saxophone, bass clarinet) Howard Cairns (double bass), Hugh Harvey (drums), Wang Zheng -Ting (sheng).

Lisathe is an Australian trio formed following a series of improvised performances by Brendan Clark, Oliver Thorpe and Miles Thomas.

The self titled debut release is a collection of music written by composers from Iceland. They interpret the source material in a way that renders each piece anew - each song is a new vista in and of itself whilst remaining true to the intentions of the composers. Lisathe’s sound is one of experimentation fused with familiar, homely textures that recalls the likes of Bill Frisell, Charlie Haden and Daniel Lanois.

Miles Thomas (drums), Oliver Thorpe (pedal steel guitar), Brendan Clarke Jnr (bass)
