ahimsa: Meditations on gandhi

Sandy Evans, Ahimsa: Meditations on Gandhi

An entrancing evening featuring two Indian-jazz intercultural projects by some of Australia’s leading jazz and Indian musicians, directed and composed by Sandy Evans whose recent collaboration, Bridge of Dreams received rave reviews from a sold-out performance at The City Recital Hall for the 2019 Sydney Festival.

Ahimsa reflects on Gandhi’s writings on non-violence showcasing the inspirational Sarangan Sriranganthan and the brilliant Bobby Singh in an innovative, contemporary context with the inventor of the airsticks Alon Ilsar. It has been developed with the assistance of an Australia Council Fellowship and features excerpts from Gandhi's writings translated into Sanskrit by Chris Whiteman and Vasudevaycharya.

The Sandy Evans Trio with Bobby Singh will present their ‘…masterfully performed fusion of jazz and Indian classical musics with a sprinkling of other influences from across the globe’ (Cummins, 2015). Featuring soulful, melodic improvisations and stunning tabla and drum exchanges, this is music to lift the spirit and nourish the soul.

Sandy Evans (soprano and tenor saxophone), Sarangan Sriranganathan (sitar, vocals), Bobby Singh (tabla), Brett Hirst (bass), Alon Ilsar (airsticks, drums) Toby Hall (drums)
