Sydney composer and trumpeter Eamon Dilworth presents his new ensemble and album Viata, 'Life' in Romanian. This album launch brings together highly regarded improvisers and composers Alister Spence, Jonathan Zwartz, Carl Morgan and Paul Derricott to form a pensive soundtrack that captures the mood of Eamon's Romanian wandering. They are supported by Kate Wadey Trio, known for their charm and sophistication within a characterful swing jazz flare.
Each season we spotlight an outstanding early career composer and improviser as our Trigger Artist. Double bassist Jacques Emery will perform his compositions in collaboration with two of Sydney’s most versatile and established improvisers, pianist Matt McMahon and drummer James Waples. Supporting them is the winner of the 2013 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award, Jodie Michael who explores avant-garde repertoire, uncommon song forms and melodic structures.
Paul Cutlan's string project is back with a new work that reflects on the centenary of the "war to end all wars". This work emphasises the exquisite texture within a refined sound world created by a string quartet and two of Australia's most experienced jazz musicians. Supporting them is Simon Barker with the launch of a double album of solo drumming chants, Urgency!
