Julien Wilson Quintet (9pm)

The most potent tenor to be heard in Australia these days… stupendous power, his sound so massive it seemed to threaten the structural integrity of the saxophone’s bell” – The Sydney Morning Herald

Recorded at SIMA in 2014 and featuring legendary drummer (the late) Allan Brownein one of his last recordings, This Narrow Isthmus is the latest release by multi-award winning tenor, Julien Wilson. In contrast to the ballads and standards of This Is Always, leans towards the blues and features original compositions. The songs were written with individual artists in mind, and show case the remarkable musicianship of Julien's band. For this performance the quartet has expanded to include Carl Dewhurst.

This is a rare opportunity for Sydney audiences to hear one the country’s most significant instrumental voices leading an all-star band.

Julien Wilson (saxophones) Barney McAll (piano) Jonathan Zwartz (bass) Carl Dewhurst (guitar) Hamish Stuart (drums)

Special Support Artist: Laurence Pike (8pm)

"He’s thrilling, unpredictable and peerless." Mess+Noise, Australia

Drummer Laurence Pike is best known for his work internationally with his group PVT, as well as two acclaimed duo releases with pianist Mike Nock.

His solo electro/acoustic drum performances explore texture, time and the bridge between technology and human intuition, ambitiously seeking to redefine preconceptions of the role of the drum kit.
